They are all vunlerable,
some more than others and must be protected. This is easy
and once completed will give you peace of mind. There are
essentially two types of attack you need to protect your computer
from. There are others but those two are sufficient reasons to
do something about it!
- Virus. These are programs which
attack your data or applications on your computer. They
can arrive on your computer attached to an email or on
a disk. They continually change and new ones are produced
all the time. There are thousands of different types
out there, some of them have caused major problems and
have become well known - Code Red for example.
- Intrusion. The techniques used
by Internet software developers which enable Browsers,
Email clients and other types of software (for example
FTP) to work can also be used to gain access to your
computer to perform non useful acts - for example record
your keystrokes when logging into sites. i.e. capture
login and password information. You are unlikely to know
that it is happening or has happened until it is too
late.
AntiVirus, Firewalls
and Internet Security
AntiVirus software from
suppliers such as Symantec and McAffee are very effective
in "killing" viruses on your computer and preventing them
from getting to your computer. They will warn you of viruses
on disks when you put them into your computer and warn you of
viruses which are attached to emails and "clean/kill" them upon
request or automatically.
Both suppliers also supply Internet Security/Firewall
software. These products block all access to your computer other
than by techniques which you authorise and by computers which
you authorise therefore preventing Intrusion attacks.
Because new viruses
appear all the time it is essential to keep your AntiVirus
and Intrusion measures up to date. Symantec and McAffee both supply
their products as part of a subscription service. Once
installed you can set the software up to check automatically
if it needs updating and it will get the required data and
install itself without any effort on your part making the
whole process very simple.

Websites
If you have or are developing
your own website you need to consider security issues if
you are going to ask visitors to that site to submit information
or look at informati
on.
This might be ecommerce information, credit cards etc or confidential
information. You must protect both your users and yourself
by making sure that the data passing between your website
and the users browser is safe. This is done by encrypting
it. All browsers support Digital Certificates. Also known
by various other names - SSL, Security keys and others. Basically
you buy one for your server and or domain and install it
as part of its configuration. Data from and to pages within
that domain or server which are accessed by https will be
encrypted thereby preventing unauthorised usage.

Certificate, Security section.
Servers
These are the computers
that make websites work. The server you use, its management
and more importantly where it is are often points which are
not considered. You can buy your own and use your telecommunications
supplier to connect it to the internet or rent part of one of ours
or if necessary whole servers.
If you get your own you
have the deal with all sorts of issues including its security.
Most people use third party companies for this specialised
service. A service which of course we supply.

Email
You must protect your
computer when you connect to the Internet. There are people
who create Viruses. These are just programs
written by developers who do it for a
variety of reasons the main one being notoriety. Mirroring
life, there are harmless viruses and deadly ones. Some of them
access information on your computer and do little else, others
look for specific information - bank accounts, credit card
information for fraud purposes and others cause damage to
your operating system environment which usually requires
removing everything from your computer and re-installing
everything. This will result in lots of wasted time, cost
and sadly in many cases the loss of important information
because it was not backed up or because the backup was also
infected.
Most people use Microsoft Outlook for email. There are various forms of it and there
are hundreds of millions of people using it all over the world
in a variety of different languages. Unfortunately it has one
major achilles heel, a result of its own success. Developers
create viruses to specifically attack Outlook with the assumption
that it will be on most computers.
Viruses
are spread mostly by email and by them sneaking onto your computer
when you are browsing the Web using a browser. There are steps
which you can take to protect yourself:-
- Choose
carefully the email client you use. Ask yourself if you
must use Microsoft Outlook or Explorer. Both of those are
specifically targeted by Viruses.
- Purchase,
install and keep updated Anti Virus and Internet Security
software.
- Do
not put disks or tapes into your computer unless you know
that they have come from a computer which is also protected.
- Do
not connect your computer to a network unless you know
that ALL the computers connected to it are
also protected.
- Discourage
people who send you Emails which contain pictures and/or
attachments which have come from an unknown source.
You can protect both your computer and emails using Norton Internet
Security from Symantec. We recommend and supply this product and
